St. Paul’s Playgroup

Avery at work“Play Is The Work of the Child” – Maria Montessori

“It is in playing, and only in playing, that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self.”  -D.W. Winnicott, pediatrician and psychoanalyst.

At St. Paul’s we value creativity and play.  Our playgroup is one where your child or children will be immersed in an environment that values learning, fun and play.

Each day our children self-direct the activities they wish to be involved in.  They may be content to play with our many Melissa and Doug toys with other children or enjoy the dedicated time they can spend with their parent on specific Montessori activities like painting, science experiments, reading or tray work.

After an hour and a half of fun, the children are encouraged to help clean up and take care of their environment.  We follow clean-up with a music session.

When fiscally possible, we use natural elements and recycled materials.  We encourage understanding and respect of the world we live in.

The playgroup is best suited for children aged 2-5, however one of the unique aspects of our group is that we understand if siblings need to come along.

Our goal is to create an environment that is attractive, soul-nurturing, creative and exciting.  A place where you can spend quality time with your child and other like-minded parents.

At the same time, we hope to expose the children to practical life, early literacy and math concepts in an unpressured, playful environment that leads to a love of learning.

Our Spring semester will run for eight weeks, starting on Monday, February 20th until the week of April 10th on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10-11:45.  On Mondays, the “group” activity of the day is art based, on Wednesday it is science based.  There will be no break this session.

St. Paul’s see this as a mission to the children of our community, so we try to keep costs low, but to help pay for supplies and materials we ask (for the entire 8 week session):

One child, one day a week – $40

One child, two days a week – $60

Two children, one day a week – $60

Two children, two days a week – $75

If you need financial assistance, please let us know.

Registration for the fall semester will be Monday, August 22nd at 11am.

We will have registration for the fall semester on Monday, August 22nd at 11am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (101 Main St, Chester, NY).  Currently, we’ll have a cap of about 15 children per session.  You’ll be able to see the space, check out some of the toys (the playgroup will not be set up in the entirety yet) and see if you feel comfortable.  The paperwork you’ll need to complete can be found here: playgroup documentation.  Unfortunately, if, for some unforeseen reason you need to leave the playgroup, we cannot offer a refund because we buy materials in bulk upfront for the entire semester.

Please email kerrijhaack@gmail.com if you have any questions.
